Modesty and Feminism

I’m a queer atheist.

Just thought I should put that out there.

So, why do I wear skirts and dress modestly?  First, those two things do not necessarily go hand in hand and are really two separate issues.  For this post though, let’s lump it together.  I dress modestly because I WANT to.  I’m more comfortable, physically and psychologically.

Feminisms goal should not be to be the same as men — it’s goal is for all people, regardless of sex or gender, to have equal opportunities and choices.

I want any outraged feminists out there to think about something for a minute:  why are pants liberating?   Have you considered that by wanting to ‘dress like a man’ scores of women may be saying/showing that ’being a woman is less’?  I don’t think wearing a skirt makes me submissive or less than a man.  I kick just as much ass in a dress as I do in my army fatigues and combat boots.  If I wanted to wear pants, I would.  I have some in my closet and I could have put them on this morning if I had wanted to, but I made a choice.  Not a choice to be less than someone, but to be more myself.

So, the next time you see someone in a skirt and (even worse!!!) a head covering, I hope that instead of thinking ‘oh, that poor girl’ you’ll realize that it may be a perfectly happy choice for her.

Now, that said, I am totally against the whole ‘dress modestly for God because your body is sinful and dirty’ thing.  Seriously, that’s BS.

Dress however you want, even if it’s not the norm of jeans and a t-shirt.  Women have been fighting for ages for the ability to choose :)
